Electrical Safety in Office Environments: Best Practices

Office environments may seem low-risk, but electrical hazards are one of the leading causes of workplace fires in the UK. Following best practices can protect your staff, equipment, and premises.
Avoid Overloading Sockets
With desks full of monitors, chargers, and peripherals, it's easy to overload socket outlets. Never daisy-chain extension leads, and ensure that the total load on any socket doesn't exceed 13 amps. Consider having additional sockets installed as part of a commercial installation.
PAT Testing
Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) is a routine check of electrical appliances to ensure they're safe to use. While not a legal requirement in itself, the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 do require that all electrical equipment is maintained in a safe condition. Our testing and maintenance team can help.
Cable Management
Trailing cables are a trip hazard and can also suffer damage that exposes live conductors. Use cable trays, trunking, and floor covers to keep cables tidy and protected. Any damaged cables should be replaced immediately.
Emergency Procedures
Ensure all staff know the location of the main electrical isolator and how to safely isolate power in an emergency. Emergency lighting and fire alarm systems should be tested regularly and maintained by a qualified electrician.
