Electric vehicles are now a regular part of company fleets and staff commuting across the North East, and many businesses are finding that their existing electrical supply was never designed with charging infrastructure in mind. Every project begins with a load assessment of your existing electrical supply. Before any charge point is specified, we need to understand what capacity is available, what the building already draws at peak times, and whether the incoming supply can support additional load or needs upgrading. For sites with several charge points, fleet depots, or higher power requirements, this often means looking at a three phase supply, either an existing one that can be better utilised or a new supply arranged with the distribution network operator.

Where load is constrained, we can specify load management systems that share available capacity dynamically across multiple charge points, allowing more vehicles to charge from a limited supply without the cost and delay of a full supply upgrade. This is frequently the most cost effective route for sites with a fleet of vehicles that do not all need to charge at full speed simultaneously.

There is a genuine legal and duty of care angle here as well. Charging installations must comply with BS 7671, including the specific requirements for electric vehicle charging equipment, and must incorporate appropriate protective measures for outdoor and semi outdoor installations, including protection against DC fault currents. Getting this wrong is a safety issue, not just a compliance box to tick, and it is why charge point installation should always be carried out and certified by a competent electrical contractor.

Government incentive schemes for workplace charging do exist and eligibility depends on your circumstances, so we would always recommend checking current scheme rules and funding levels directly with the relevant government body before assuming what support applies to your project, rather than relying on figures quoted by a contractor.

Installation and commissioning are carried out by our qualified engineers, with every charge point tested and certified on completion in line with BS 7671. We handle the electrical side of the project from the point of connection through to the charge point itself, coordinating with the distribution network operator where a supply upgrade is needed.

On completion you receive full documentation, including electrical installation certificates, charge point commissioning records and, where a back office platform is in use, the account set up details needed to manage charging, billing and reporting going forward.
