Retail Shop Fit Electrics

A retail shop fit runs to a fixed opening date, usually agreed well in advance and rarely with much room to move, and the electrical installation has to keep pace with every other trade on site without becoming the reason the launch slips. LC Electrical Services carries out electrical installation for retail shop fits across the North East, working with shop fitters, project managers and retailers directly to deliver power, lighting and comms in line with the wider fit out programme.

This service covers new unit fit outs, full store refurbishments and rebrands, and smaller scale refits such as a change of layout, till point relocation or lighting refresh within an existing trading unit. We work with independent retailers taking on their first unit through to multi site brands refitting stores as part of a wider rollout, adapting our approach to the scale and complexity of each project.

Retail programmes very often require out of hours or overnight working, particularly where a unit is inside a shopping centre with restricted access hours, or where an existing store needs to keep trading during the day and can only be worked on after closing. We plan our labour and material deliveries around these access windows as standard, and we are used to working to the noise and access restrictions that shopping centre management or neighbouring tenants require.

Display and track lighting is one of the areas where retail electrical work differs most from a standard commercial fit out. Lighting design in a retail unit is there to sell product, not just illuminate a room, so track and spotlight positions need to be coordinated with the visual merchandising plan, shopfitting joinery and any changes made late in the design process. We work from the lighting layout provided by the retailer's design team or shop fitter, and flag early any conflicts between the electrical containment and other trades so they can be resolved before installation rather than on site during a live build.

Till points and communications power are the other area that needs particular attention, since a store cannot open without a working point of sale, card payment terminal and any network connectivity the retailer relies on. We coordinate till and comms circuit positions with the retailer's EPOS and IT suppliers, making sure containment, power and data first fix are installed in the right sequence to avoid rework once counters and joinery are in place.

As with any commercial electrical installation, the work has to be carried out and certified to BS 7671, and a retail unit is subject to the same duties under the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 as any other commercial premises once it is trading. A shop fit is also the point at which many retailers commission emergency lighting and, where relevant, fire alarm works for the unit, since these systems typically need to be installed or updated as part of the fit out rather than retrofitted once trading has started.

Our process on a shop fit starts with a site visit and review of the fit out drawings and programme, from which we produce an itemised quotation covering first fix containment, power and lighting circuits, till and comms provision, and any emergency lighting or signage circuits required. Because retail programmes change quickly, we keep this quotation structured so that variations, such as an added display feature or a moved till position, can be priced and agreed quickly without holding up the wider programme.

Installation is carried out to the agreed programme, attending site alongside the shop fitter, joiners and other trades, and working to the access hours agreed with the retailer or centre management. We test and commission every circuit before handover, checking display lighting circuits, socket outlets, till power and any comms containment are all working correctly ahead of the fit out being signed off.

On completion we provide full certification for the installation along with as fitted information covering circuit layouts, useful for the retailer's own facilities team or for any future refit. Where emergency lighting has been installed as part of the fit out, we also hand over the initial test records and log book to keep the store compliant from day one of trading.
