Electrical work in a school, academy or college brings a different set of pressures to a typical commercial site, term time constraints, safeguarding requirements, and a duty of care to children and staff that has to be built into every visit. LC Electrical Services works as a dedicated electrical contractor to education settings across the North East, delivering everything from routine testing to full holiday refurbishment programmes.

Our education work covers primary and secondary schools, academies, sixth forms and colleges. We are equally comfortable being brought in for a single EICR or lighting upgrade at a standalone primary school as we are running a coordinated programme of works across a multi academy trust's estate, where consistency of standards and reporting across several sites matters as much as the work itself.

Safeguarding is treated as a fixed requirement, not an add-on. Our engineers working in education settings hold current DBS checks, and we work with school site teams on sign in procedures, supervision requirements and any specific safeguarding policy the school asks us to follow. We understand that access to a school is not the same as access to a commercial office, and we plan our visits accordingly.

The bulk of planned electrical work in schools has to happen outside term time, and we build our holiday programmes around this. Whether it is a single week during February half term or a longer summer holiday programme, we plan the scope, sequence and labour resource in advance so that work is completed and the building is fully back in service before pupils and staff return, without work spilling into the first days of a new term.

EICR inspections are one of the most requested services from schools, both as a standalone compliance requirement and as part of wider condition surveys ahead of capital works or trust-wide asset management plans. Under the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 and general health and safety duties, school leadership and, in the case of academies, the trust, have a responsibility to ensure the electrical installation is maintained in a safe condition, and a current EICR is the standard evidence used to demonstrate that.

Lighting is another area where we do a significant amount of work in schools, from replacing ageing fluorescent fittings in classrooms and halls with LED alternatives that reduce running costs and improve light quality, through to emergency lighting testing and certification in line with BS 5266, which is essential given the number of pupils on site and the layout of corridors and assembly areas.

Our process for education clients follows the same structure as our wider commercial work, adapted to the calendar constraints of a school. We start with a free site survey, usually arranged during term time so we can assess the building while it is in use and understand any operational constraints, before producing an itemised quotation that separates the different elements of work, whether that is inspection, remedial repairs, lighting replacement or new installation.

Work is carried out and certified to BS 7671 by qualified engineers, and where a project spans a holiday period we agree a clear programme with the site team in advance, including any phased handback of areas that need to be usable before the full programme is complete, such as a hall needed for an early INSET day.

On completion, we hand over full documentation, including electrical certificates, EICR reports with any classified observations, and emergency lighting or fire alarm test records where relevant. For multi academy trusts, we can format and structure this documentation consistently across sites so it fits into an existing estates management system.
