The Marine Offshore Safety Training (MOST) Centre serves as a critical hub for high-stakes industrial education, demanding electrical systems that are as resilient as the environments they simulate. We were commissioned to undertake an extensive series of electrical remediations and infrastructure upgrades across the facility to ensure full compliance with BS 7671 (18th Edition) standards and to enhance the operational safety of specialized training platforms.

The project commenced with a comprehensive remediation of defects identified in a previous third-party EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Report). To bring the site to a "Satisfactory" status, we replaced legacy distribution boards with modern 3-phase 18th Edition boards, incorporating RCBO protection to ensure that fault-induced tripping remains localized without compromising the power supply to the wider facility. This phase also involved essential maintenance tasks, such as replacing light fittings and fans, as well as repairing damaged distribution board covers to restore structural integrity. All remedial works were meticulously documented and accompanied by Minor Works Certificates.

A significant portion of the project focused on the specialized training platforms, beginning with the lifeboat training area. Here, we installed a new, robust containment system directly onto the metal girder structure, carefully reincorporating existing mineral-insulated (pyro) wiring to maintain fire-resistant integrity. We then deployed new lighting circuits featuring emergency backup fittings, controlled by dusk-to-dawn sensors for automated safety and manual overrides for specific training scenarios. This ensured the platform remains fully functional and safe for evening drills while providing the flexibility required for varied instruction.

Further upgrades were executed at the fire training centre, where the environment is particularly punishing due to extreme heat and water exposure. We overhauled the defective lighting on the main platform, utilizing Steel Wire Armoured (SWA) cabling secured with girder clips for maximum mechanical protection. To ensure a completely watertight and heat-resistant seal, all terminations were made using Wiska boxes and Storm glands from the rotary isolator onwards. The installation of new floodlighting and an IP-rated switch provides the facility with a durable, high-visibility solution capable of withstanding the rigors of intense fire-safety simulations. The final result is a modern, fully compliant industrial electrical infrastructure that guarantees the safety and reliability of the MOST Centre's vital training operations.
