Who needs an EICR?
Every commercial, industrial and rented premises in the UK is required to maintain its fixed wiring in a safe condition under the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989. In practice, that means scheduling a periodic EICR inspection at intervals appropriate to the building's use — typically every 5 years for offices and retail, every 3 years for industrial premises, and annually for high-risk environments such as petrol stations and swimming pools.

What the codes mean
Each observation on the report is given a code: C1 (danger present), C2 (potentially dangerous), C3 (improvement recommended) or FI (further investigation required).
